Instrument created within the Mandingo Empire of Soundiata Keïta in the thirteenth century, which stretched from Guinea to eastern Mali, northern Côte d'Ivoire and western Burkina Faso.

The djembe is part of a polyrhythmic ensemble, it is most often accompanied by doundounba, sangban, kenkeni. The djembe itself is available between djembe accompaniment and solo. Its primary purpose is to accompany dance during festive events.

In the 1950s the djembe began to be exported outside Africa, thanks to Fodeba Keita and the African ballets, then thanks to Guinea and its president Sekou Toure, who erected the national ballet of the republic as a showcase of his diet.

It was in the 1980s that the Djembe conquered the world, thanks to great djembefolaw (players) like Mamady Keïta, the most famous of them, but also Fadouba Oularé, Famoudou Konaté, Soungalo Coulibaly, Adama Dramé ...

Regarding the manufacture, we bring the greatest care to the drying of our woods. It takes months or even years between roughing and finishing to get stable djembe that will not deform. We use various types of wood such as linké (or lengué, lenke), gwénè (balafon wood) and noumou yiri (blacksmith wood). You will find among our casks for sale, djembes with forms of diverse inspiration, Mali, Ivory Coast and even Guinean.

If you do not find the instrument of your choice, you can contact us to place a custom djembe order giving us the dimensions, the wood essence and the desired style.
