This distinctive instrument popular in Mali and Burkina Faso is available in 8, 10, 12, 14 and 20 string models.

Like our koras, all of our kamelé n'goni feature oil lubricated guitar machine heads for tuning.

We're thinking musicians prefer to invest a little more for an instrument that is significantly more convenient and easier to tune. Made entirely in our own workshop, we pay great attention to the materials used: We begin by choosing the roundest and smoothest calabashes.

Most importantly we choose only mature calabashes, having often found that gourds which are harvested young when they are too green are more fragile. We avoid such calabashes so as to be sure that our instruments are not easily broken and the calabash is not deformed by the pressure excerted by the bridge and strings.

The goat skin we use is free from imperfections, supple and sufficiently thick enough to mount well on the calabash. Having observed that goat skin can sometimes become too dry and a little stiff, we go further to choose supple skins of notable elasticity, and discard skins which have become too papiery.

The neck, bridge and handles are crafted from balafon wood, a choice we have arrived at for acoustic reasons. We make sure we choose wood free from cracks and knots, as well as ensuring it is absolutley dry so as not to deform over time.

We now offer a unique semi tone kamele n'goni fitted with the same machine heads used for classical harps, allowing the player to instantly adjust the note of each string by a semitone.

They are amplified using micro piezo brand Schatten.

Finally we can accomodate your preference for the size of calabash you prefer. All of our kamele n'goni are sold with a waterproof case made to measure.

    The kamele n'goni 14 strings :

We now offer kamele n'gonis 14 strings for sale.

We sometimes craft them like koras, with hemispherical gourds and parchment cowhides.

But we can also mount them as classic kamele n'gonis.

To order yours, you can use the contact form.

  • 20 strings

In this category are our kamélé n'gonis 20 strings.

Given the pressure generated by the high number of these kamélé n'goni, we chose to assemble them like koras, with hemispherical calabashes mounted with skins of parchment calves.

In addition to the difference in scale (pentatonic for kamélé n'gonis and diatonic for the koras), the major difference between the two instruments lies in the position of the pegs on the neck. The kamélé n'goni has 20 strings alternated from beginning to end.

  • 24 strings

To satisfy your demands, we now offer these n'goni with 24 strings. They are crafted like coras, except the pegs which are alternate trhough the handle, and also conceived to be tuned in pentatonic scale.
