The choice of the wood of our balafons is meticulous, it must have no cracks or knots and it has been dried for several years so that it can go into the furnace without cracking.

Indeed, in addition to natural drying, the blades of our all our balafons spend several weeks in solar ovens in order to be completely dry so as to obtain the sought after sound.

Their finishes are particularly careful, all the blades are filed, scraped, sanded then polished.

The calebashes undergo a treatment in order to be completely hollowed, which has the effect of giving them this green color.

Our pentatonic balafons are available in 12, 16 and 20 blades.

The diatonic ones are balafons of Guinean style with 22 blades.

The chromatics are composed of two balafons that complement each other to form an instrument with 37 blades (3 full octaves).

  • Pentatonic

At BaraGnouma we are meticulous in our choice of wood used to craft balafons.

The wood must have been dried for several years, and be free from cracks or knots. We allow the keys further time to gently smoke and dry out, whilst ensuring that we don't heat them excessively thus weakening the wood.

Each key is finished with great care, time being taken to file, sand and polish each side resulting in a neat and even finish.

The calebashes also undergo a special treatment leaving them completely hollow, and giving them a characteristic green colour.

The keys and calebashes are thus mounted on a sturdy frame of iroko wood tied with cowhide. Further, we use a special system to suspend the keys on a rope drawn heavily on both sides of the frame. This ensures that the strike of the beaters on the keys is slightly dampened and the resulting sound is soft and clear, neither too sharp nor too dry.

We offer our instruments tuned to F, G, A, C, D but all pentatonic keys are available on request.

  • Diatonic

Our diatonic balafons conform to the guinean tradition with 22 solid square keys.

We pay great attention when smoking these square keys, which requires more time to dry out than the flat keys of a pentatonic balafon.

We offer instruments in C, D, E, F, G, A, B but other keys are available on request.

  • Chromatic

Consisting of a diatonic Guinean style balafon onto which is grafted a second comprising of sharps (#) thus completing a chromatic scale. The pair of balafons are nested together though can be easily seperated.
